Siding is a system, and while that system will vary depending on the overall materials to be installed it basically consists of the following...
- A good weather resistant barrier to keep the water out. Most sidings are not water tight, especially vinyl, and the weather resistant barrier is what does the actual water proofing. Don't let your contractor install new siding without first installing some kind of weather resistant barrier such as Tyvek or Typar.
- Flashing compoents, such as window wraps or metal Z flashing at window and door headers. properly installed vinyl siding will also consist of mounting blocks for lights and water faucets.
- Accessories such as new lights, door bells, mail boxes, address numbers and other accessories will really make your house POP with a completely brand new exterior, and these little accessories don't cost very much.

Something else you should consider is a tear off of the existing siding. While it is possible to go over some siding when you have multiple layers of siding you really should tear off for best quality. Also in some cases a tear off is necessary. Don't let your contractor go over old rotten wood, or siding that is currently sagging and falling off! Faster and easier isn't always better. |
